top ten learning and teaching gifts for Christmas

Give a Learning Gift this Christmas & Giveaway

Do buy educational gifts?  Toys that teach?

My Nan desperately tried to buy us educational gifts at Christmas when we were kids, books, a puzzle and i think we all got coin collection albums one year.  I dont think we minded but we always knew it would be something "learning".  I have to say some thirty odd years later i do try and make sure there is some things under the tree that teach something.

Here is our Top Ten Learning and Educational Gifts for Christmas

1. Books. You can't go wrong there is something for everyone!  If you're not sure get a voucher so the receiver can choose their own book.

2. Magazine Subscription. I've received the Delicious Magazine for years now and its great, each month i get a present.  You can also get CSIRO for kids or National Geographic. Sports, Cars, Sewing, Crafts, Cooking, Pets, you name it it comes in a magazine.

3. Learning Toys. Leap Frog have a fabulous range of learning toys, multimedia devices and reading systems.  We've reviewed some of the Leap Frog brand products you can see them all here.  Mums Take Five Leap Frog Product Reviews.

4. Arts and Crafts. Its a great time to restock the bits in the craft box; Sewing Kits,Coloured papers and cards, stickers, craft pieces, pom poms, glues. Brushes and paints. Glitter in our house we use lots of glitter.

5. Hands on Play.  My favourite. So many ideas, these are they toys that keep and get used over and over. Pending on the age of the kids there is always something;  Building blocks or Lego, Science Kits, Clay and Play Dough, Plaster projects, Kinetic Sand and Rainbow Loom bands and kits.

6. Puzzles and Board Games. Fun for all. Some great for quiet time and some great for family time.  Cards and travel versions of games are great for stocking stuffers.  Puzzles are great for little ones too you can get some great toddler puzzles.

7. Sports and Outdoors. If to you want your kids to play outside give them things to encourage to be out there! It doesnt need to be a trampoline, it can be small things like hoola hoops, bug catchers, LeapBand,  binoculars, plastic trucks, balls, sprinkler, kites and even gardening tools.

8. Stationery and Drawing. My kids always get a new set or pencils, crayons or textas. Whatever needs replacing. Some fun stationery is always a great way to encourage working on those fine motor skills. My kids love activity books too.  Drawing boards, etchasketch type of toys are always good fun.

9. Kitchen Fun. Encourage some up and coming chefs with some of their own cooking tools, cookie cutters, an apron or a kitchen appliance like a popcorn maker and some kernels.

10. Activity and Outings. Tickets to a show, the movies, entry to a museum.  Annual passes or entry passes are a great way to get kids out and about, learning and trying something new.

I'm giving my daughter singing Anna and Elsa dolls. This might be a huge mistake as I'm already sick of hearing the songs, ha!

Our son has OT work and so as part of that, unbeknownst to him, we are buying him Lego to help with his fine motor skills. It will be lots of fun for all of us and he won't even know it's part of his programme.

This Christmas I've had the kids write out their own choices. It is so much easier to shop knowing exactly what the kids want! I will be buying an easel and chalkboard for the toddler. I like educational toys the most. X

Dig deep in my pocket...
It's not a red rocket
I am giving my son a sand box and bucket.
He needs to get dirty and build and destroy
he's just so busy, my blonde little boy.
I'd like him to learn imaginative play,
Seeing his smile brightens my day
