How to Keep Carpets Clean with Kids and Pets

Tips to keep carpets cleaner for longer

Carpet cleaning can be expensive and the last thing you want is your child spilling juice or your pet walking mud through your home causing stains on your newly cleaned carpet.

Here are some ideas on how to keep carpets clean when you have kids and pets in the home.

Routine carpet cleaning and maintenance

Regular maintenance and cleaning is crucial in keeping your carpet in good condition. This cleaning should include:
* Vacuuming – at minimum carpets should be vacuumed twice a week. High traffic areas will require more attention. This will help to reduce the dirt and grime build up on your carpet
fibres that happens over the life of your flooring.
* Treat stains immediately – just like clothing, delaying treatment could result in permanent discolouration. If you have tried to remove stains but have been unsuccessful, you should
call a professional carpet cleaner as soon as possible.
* Carpet cleaning – it is recommended that you get your carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year. The same applies for high traffic rugs in your home. On the surface they
may appear clean, however carpet fibres hide dust, dirt, pollutants and pet hair which is why regular cleaning is essential for the health of you and your family.
* Set some rules – to help reduce the amount of spills, food and dirt that is walked into your carpet, you should consider implementing some rules for children and pets. For example, no food or drink on carpets. If pets are indoors they must lay on a certain mat or bed and not on the carpet, this will confine the mess to one area.

Tips for minimising dirt on carpets

There are plenty of ways you can take care of your carpets and reduce the amount of mess being spread through flooring. Here are just a few ideas:
* Add mats to your entries. Front, back and side doors. Any door that family and friends use to enter your home. This instantly reduces the amount of dirt that is being walked inside.
* Shoes outside. This is particularly true if your occupation requires work boots or your child plays in the sandpit at school.
* Clean air conditioner filters. Doing this regularly will mean not only will your air con run more efficiently, dirty filters blow dust particles back into your home.

Keeping your carpets clean can be a mission but by following the above tips you should be able to get the most out of your next carpet clean.
